Chiefs Spooked by Devils

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Trenton, Nj. - Johnstown faltered on the road for the first time this season and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Trenton Devils on Thursday night.

The first period saw the Chiefs and Devils locked in another defensive struggle as neither team could score or generate many scoring opportunities. Johnstown managed only five shots on net and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Trenton, meanwhile, was held to a meager six shots in the first and was also 0-for-3 on the power play.

After a slow opening frame, the second started lightning-quick. Trevor Kell was able to work a 2-on-1 with newly acquired Devil Brett Pilkington and Kell put a one-timer past Ian Keserich 1:31 into the second to give Trenton the 1-0 lead. Johnstown wouldn't take long to answer, though, as Mike Bartlett scored his first as a Chief to tie the game at one with 2:08 gone by in the second.

With Johnstown on the power play, Bartlett circled behind the Trenton net to the left wing. Randy Rowe was camped out in front, but Bartlett went to Ray Macias at the point instead. Macias went right back to Bartlett who fired a wrist shot past Devils' goalie Jeff Frazee to tie the game.

The game stayed wide open in the third period, but Trenton struck first once again with Chris Tutalo finding a loose puck just above Keserich's crease and lifting it under the crossbar with 1:39 gone by. Jason Spence answered quickly with a tip-in goal at 2:03. The goal was Spence's first of the year while Greg Gallagher and Ray Macias earned assists. Trenton fought back, however, getting goals from Tyler Burton (5:58), Scott Bartlett (14:53), and an empty-netter by Eric Castonguay (19:21) to beat the Chiefs in Trenton for the first time since December 27, 2007.

Ian Keserich took the loss in net making 24 saves, and the Johnstown power play went 1-for-7.
