Austin Spurs News Release

Austin, TX April 5- The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today announced that Dennis Johnson has been named as a member of the Enshrinement Class of 2010. He is one of three in the class to be honored posthumously. The announcement was made at a press conference in Indianapolis, Indiana earlier today. The NBA legend was the head coach of the Austin Toros in their 2005 inaugural season and was in his second season at the time of his death.

Johnson's impact on the Austin community was immediate. He hosted many youth basketball clinics and camps around the Austin area and was admired for his willingness to do so. Word of his inclusion in this year's class began circling this past weekend as the Toros hosted their annual Dennis Johnson Memorial High School All-Star games for central Texas standout senior boys and girls. Many local high school basketball coaches participate annually in his honor.

Earlier this season, the Toros teamed up with the Maine Red Claws to sponsor a petition encouraging the enshrinement of Johnson. This joint effort spearheaded by both Peter Lubell, Toros COO and Jon Jennings, Red Claws President and General Manager marked the first of its kind among D-League teams. Signatures were collected in both venues and forwarded to the Naismith Hall of Fame.

"Today is a special and emotional day in the history of the Austin Toros. Dennis Johnson meant a lot to this team, this community and the game of basketball and we are proud to join in the celebration of his incredible career," offered Peter Lubell Toros COO.

A banner with jersey #3 hangs at the Austin Convention Center every season in Johnson's memory.
