
Dempsey Announces Retirement After Sunday's Game

Washington, Pa. - Jacob Dempsey, designated hitter and infielder for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced his retirement at the conclusion of Sunday's game against the Normal Cornbelters.
Dempsey's career with the Wild Things began in 2008. Through August 14, he batted .279 with 174 runs, 262 hits, 60 doubles, nine triples, 56 home runs and 219 RBI while with Washington. He also was named to the year-end Frontier League All-Star Team in 2008 and 2009.
Dempsey was batting .223 this season entering Sunday's game. In 64 games, he has collected 36 RBI, 25 runs, 48 hits, eight doubles and one triple. His eight home runs lead the Wild Things this season, and he ranks first on the team and fourth in the Frontier League with 47 walks.
In 2009, Dempsey batted .281 and led the league in homeruns (31 - tied for first), RBIs (95) and extra-base hits (56). He also accumulated 81 runs, 101 hits, 21 doubles and four triples. In 2008, he led the league in doubles (31) and RBI (88) while batting .310.
Manager Darin Everson said, "Jacob had a productive career over the last couple of years in Washington and we were fortunate to have him as a part of our organization. We wish him the best of luck in the future."
Managing director Todd Marlin also expressed his gratitude. "We would like to thank Jacob for his contributions to the team during the last three seasons. He has been a fan favorite and a league leader and will be missed here in Washington."
A 2006 draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, Dempsey spent one season with Batavia of the Class-A New York Penn League where he batted .262 with 55 hits and 36 RBI in 58 games. Throughout his four-year professional career, he batted .276 with 317 hits, 63 home runs and 255 RBI.
The Myock, N.C., native played college baseball at Winthrop University where he was named a First Team All-American by rivals.com and a Second Team All-American by Baseball America.
