Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums battled back from 3-0 down to tie the game, but were unable to complete a second comeback as the River City Rascals took a 10-7 final.
Things did not start well for the Beach Bums as River City plated three first inning runs to take an early lead. Undaunted, the Beach Bums, scored a pair of second inning runs on a single by Chris Engell and a ground out by Matt Brown to cut the gap to 3-2. Traverse City fought back again in the fourth, bringing home a run on Brown sac fly to score Jason Codiroli to tie the game at 3-3.
The tie wouldn't last long, however, as after recording the first two outs of the inning, the Beach Bums saw the Rascals score three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. A Jo-Jo- Gutierrez homer in the seventh put RC up 10-3. Traverse City would score a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Michael Diaz RBI single to cut into the gap.
The Beach Bums made a game of it in the ninth as the inning started with Keli'i Zablan getting the first two outs. A double from Andrew Marshall and a walk to Codiroli with a passed ball on the fourth pitch wide put runners on the corners. After Codiroli moved to second on defensive indifference, Chris Engell singled for his third hit of the game scoring both runners and making it 10-6. After Engell moved to second without a throw, Matt Brown singled as well to put Engell home and cut the advantage to 10-7.
A pitching change didn't end the rally immediately as Michael Diaz singled, moving Brown up to third and brought the tying run to the plate. The Beach Bums luck ran out, however, as Derrick Miramontes got Chase Burch to fly out to left to end the game.
The win went to Ryan Zink (5-4) who went 5.1 for the Rascals. Miramontes recorded his third save. Michael Moore (6-5) took the loss for the Beach Bums.
There was plenty of offense to go around for TC in the game as Engell and Diaz collected three hits each while Engell and Brown drove in three runs apiece.
The Beach Bums head out on their final road trip of the regular season starting a three game series at gateway on Tuesday. Kevin Reese (8-7, 3.99) will get the start for Traverse City against Rycky Meinhold (1-3, 5.40) for Gateway. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 7:45. For more information or tickets, call 943-0100 or log on to www.tcbeachbums.com.
