MARION, Ill. - Ryan Bird outdueled Lake Erie all-star Travis Risser Sunday evening as the Miners took the rubber-match against Lake Erie, 3-1, at Rent One Park. Bird did not allow a run until the eighth inning and improved his record to 4-1 with the victory. Risser allowed three runs in five-plus innings. With the loss, he fell to 6-4 on the season. Erik Draxton claimed his fourth save in his fourth appearance with the Miners. Southern Illinois completed the six-game homestand with five wins and moved their league-best record to 55-23 in 2010. The Miners magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now eight with 18 games left to play.
Bird delivered another great outing, striking out a season-high nine batters in seven and a third innings. He allowed just one run off four hits. Lake Erie's Rafael Turner and Dom Duggan were the only two players to record hits against Bird.
Southern Illinois led the entire way. Jereme Milons led off the game with a single then scored on Todd Martin's double to left field. Milons led off the sixth inning with a double and crossed the plate again on Todd Martin's RBI ground out. Kent Gerst accounted for the other Miners score in the game. He stole three bases in the game, giving him 27 on the season. He is 14-for-15 in stolen base attempts since joining the Miners midseason. The Miners scored their three runs off five hits Sunday night.
With the win the Miners set a new franchise record with 32 home victories, passing the previous record set last season. Southern Illinois has six home games remaining in the regular season. The Miners are now a perfect 8-0 in the final game of a homestand this season.
Following an offday Monday, the Miners will begin their nine-game road trip, the longest road trip in franchise history. Southern Illinois will start in Washington against the Wild Things with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch from CONSOL Energy Park Tuesday night. The Miners will have Brett Scarpetta (6-3, 4.08) on the mound against Washington, who has not yet announced a starter.
