Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - The Snappers bounced back from a rough first-half opener to shut down the River Bandits 4-2 on Friday night. Beloit used just two pitchers- tandem starters Joe DeMers and Bryce Conley- who shut down the first-half champion Quad Cities squad.
The Bandits drew first blood on Trey Dawson's two-run double in the second inning. That was all DeMers (1-1, 5.06 ERA) would allow, however: the righty fired five frames of five-hit ball to earn his first career win. DeMers struck out five batters without issuing a walk.
Beloit answered back by taking advantage of some shoddy Quad Cities defense in the bottom of the second. River Bandits starter R.J. Freure (4-2, 3.54 ERA) drilled Max Schuemann to start the inning, and then Devin Foyle, who was attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt, reached on an error by catcher Cesar Salazar. Quad Cities followed with two more blunders in a circus play that involved throwing errors from Salazar and right fielder Jonathan Lacroix, allowing Beloit's first run to score. Cobie Vance then knotted the game at 2-2 with an RBI double. Logan Farrar gave the Snappers the rest of the offense they needed in the third inning with a two-run single.
Bryce Conley relieved DeMers with four stellar innings of relief, earning his second career save. He allowed just two hits while walking none and punching out seven.
The River Bandits outhit Beloit seven to six on Friday, but the Snappers' hits came at the right times. Anthony Churlin went a season-high 3-for-3 with a double; Astros No. 26 prospect Alex McKenna delivered the only multi-hit performance for Quad Cities.
The Snappers look to take the series lead tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CT. 2019 Midwest League All-Star Aiden McIntyre (2-4, 2.24 ERA) takes the mound for Beloit while the River Bandits counter with Brett Daniels (3-4, 2.16 ERA).
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and have been the Single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. For more ticket information, contact the Snappers office at (608) 362- 2272 or visit our website, www.snappersbaseball.com.
