West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps were swept in a doubleheader for the second straight time and began the second half by watching the Lake County Captains throw a no-hitter in wins by scores of 9-4 and 4-0 on Friday night at Classic Park.
The no-hitter marks the first time West Michigan has been no-hit this season, and the second straight year the "Caps have been no-hit by the Captains. Lake County kept the Whitecaps hitless in the first game of a doubleheader on April 25, 2018.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Whitecaps got a home run from Vinny Esposito to lead off the game, and a solo shot off the bat of Hector Martinez to take a 4-2 lead in the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Whitecaps starter Adam Wolf failed to finish the frame in giving up six runs in 3.2 innings and helped Lake County score seven times in the frame. Reliever Sandel De La Cruz faced six batters and failed to record an out before Angel Reyes pitched the final 2.1 innings in a 9-4 loss.
In the nightcap, Cody Ferhat lined his first home run of the year in the third inning to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. After adding a tally in the fourth, Lake County ran Whitecaps starter Robbie Welhaf out of the game after 5.2 innings despite a career-high nine strikeouts with two more in the sixth. Meanwhile, Captains pitchers Eli Lingos, Luis Araujo and Kellen Rholl combined to retire the first 20 Whitecaps hitters they faced. The Captains came within one strike of a perfect game before West Michigan infielder Nick Quintana walked with a full-count to break up the bid for perfection.
Captains pitchers Thomas Ponticelli (5-4) and Araujo (1-1) picked up the victories for Lake County, while Wolf (2-9) extended his Midwest League lead in losses with his ninth defeat of the season in the first game, while Welhaf (2-2) took the loss in the nightcap.
