Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds were shut out by the West Virginia Power, 5-0 on Monday evening. Both offenses were rather quiet with five hits for each team, but the Power manufactured five runs in the sixth inning.
Mitch Horacek was lights out in the first few innings. After a JaCoby Jones single in the first inning, the Shorebirds' starter retired the next 14 batters. The left-hander struck out eight batters, just one shy of matching his career-high. Horacek particularly dominated left-handed batters as Escober, McGuire and Weiss combined for 1-for-9 and five strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Power starter Buddy Borden matched Horacek with five shutout frames of his own, allowing just two hits. The previous night Delmarva managed just two runs on six hits in the series finale against Lakewood.
The game hinged on a few breaks in West Virginia's favor in the sixth inning. Francisco Diaz reached on an infield single that skipped off the glove of Drew Dosch's diving attempt. Chris Diaz laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Horacek's throw got away from Simpson at first base. Elvis Escobar drove in both runners on a flare single to center. Another error by Delmarva extended the inning, and Danny Collins blooped another two-run single to make it 5-0.
The Shorebirds could not muster any offense against any of the three pitchers for Delmarva. Felipe Gonzalez hurled three scoreless innings in relief, and Brett McKinney closed out the ninth for the shutout.
Delmarva and West Virginia continue the three-game series on Tuesday evening. Left-hander Steven Brault (7-5, 3.53) will try to even the series against the Power righty Dovydas Neverauskas (4-7, 5.79). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
