Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds shut down the Lakewood BlueClaws for a 7-0 victory on Saturday evening. Delmarva (33-22) shined with another stellar pitching performance, the sixth shutout of the year for the Shorebirds' staff.
Delmarva jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. To start the game, Mike Yastrzemski reached on an infield single and Jeff Kemp was struck in the helmet with a pitch. After Drew Dosch drew a walk, Trey Mancini lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Yastrzemski. Kemp scored on an error by the first baseman Willians Astudillo.
In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds broke it wide open. Yastrzemski sparked another rally, this time with a well-placed bunt single. Trey Mancini roped a two-run single that split the right-center gap to make it 4-0. Mancini collected three more RBIs on the day, bringing his series total to 10 runs driven in. Conor Bierfeldt capped the five-run frame off with a two-run home run that nicked off the left field foul pole.
Mitch Horacek earned his second straight win with six scoreless innings. The left-hander allowed just four hits and one walk compared to eight strikeouts, one shy of his career-high. Dylan Rheault and Jon Keller combined for three shutout frames in relief to complete the shutout. Tyler Viza struggled in the outing for Lakewood, falling to 2-6.
The Shorebirds have now won 10 of their last 11 games, and 20 of their last 25 since May 7th. Delmarva finishes May with a 21-9 record, the first 20-win month for a Shorebirds squad since May 2006.
Delmarva will go for a series sweep on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Steven Brault (5-2, 3.06) will start the finale for Delmarva against right-hander Mark Leiter, Jr. (4-4, 4.68). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
