LAKEWOOD, NJ - Mitch Horacek threw six scoreless innings, striking out eight, while Trey Mancini added three RBIs and Conor Bierfeldt homered as Delmarva blanked Lakewood 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.
The Shorebirds (33-22) have won six of their last seven, and the first three games of this series, while the BlueClaws (20-33) have dropped six of their last seven and fell to 13 games under .500 for the first time this year. The BlueClaws were shutout for the fifth time this year.
Horacek, in his first appearance against the BlueClaws, allowed four hits and was one of his season high with eight strikeouts.
Delmarva scored two in the first inning on a SAC fly by Mancini and a fielding error by Willians Astudillo.
After Tyler Viza threw scoreless innings in the second, third, and fourth, the Birds scored five times in the fifth inning. Mancini had a two-run single, which was followed by an RBI single from Austin Wynns. Conor Bierfeldt added a 2-run home run off the left field foul pole to make it 7-0.
Willians Astudillo had two of the five BlueClaws hits and in the process extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by a BlueClaws pitcher this year. Carlos Tocci, JP Crawford, and Jiandido Tromp had the other Lakewood hits.
The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (4-4, 4.68) opposes LHP Steven Brault (5-2, 3.06).
