Defensive Struggles Lead To Braves Loss

Rome, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Rome Braves 3-2 Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,236. This concludes the series with Savannah and Rome will begin a three game set with Charleston tomorrow at 7pm.

In the bottom of the second Rome took advantage of a dropped fly ball in left by the Sand Gnats to load the bases after a walk and a Matt Weaver single. Rome would scratch across a run later in the inning with two outs after Matt Lipka walked and brought home David Rohm to give the Braves the lead.

The Sand Gnats would overtake the Braves in the top of the fifth when a Matt Weaver throwing error allowed Sam Honeck to score. Two outs later Wilfredo Tovar brought in a second run on a sacrifice fly to give Savannah a 2-1 advantage. Rome would manage to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Edward Salcedo laced a leadoff double and later scored thanks to a Rohm sacrifice fly.

Savannah would not leave the game tied for long after they pushed across their only earned run of the game in the top of the seventh. Joe Bonfe doubled to leadoff the inning and later scored on an RBI groundout by Tovar to give Savannah the 3-2 lead. The Sand Gnats edged an insurance run in the top of the ninth after a walk and two Rome errors lead to another unearned run for Savannah. Rome went quietly in the ninth for a 4-2 final and has now dropped their last six games.

Ryan Fraser (5-5) picks up the win for Savannah while Dan Jurik (0-1) gets the loss for Rome. Hamilton Bennett (8) picks up the save.
