AUGUSTA, Ga. - Shawn Sanford spun 7.0 innings of two-hit shutout ball to lead the Augusta GreenJackets over the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-1, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of a crowd of 3,880 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The GreenJackets improved to 3-5 and 34-44 overall in securing the four-game series split, while the RiverDogs dropped to 3-5 and 29-49 overall.

Augusta established a 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning against Charleston starter Shane Greene (2-9). Carlos Willoughby grounded a single into left field, and was delivered to the plate when Ryan Lollis lined a two-out RBI single.

Raynor Campbell produced a run with the help of some spotty RiverDogs' defense to up the GreenJackets' lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Campbell laid down a bunt single, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error by Gary Sanchez, and came down the line on a Lollis RBI groundout.

Three more Augusta tallies opened the game up in the fourth inning, as the advantage swelled to 5-0 on the strength of three hits and a Charleston error.

Rafael Rodriguez started the rally with a double, and Joel Weeks then ripped a two-bagger of his own to move the GreenJackets ahead, 3-0. Weeks came in to account for the next marker when Willoughby reached on a fielding error by Greene. Campbell capped the damage a batter later, dropping a RBI single in front of RiverDogs' right fielder Mike Ferraro.

Greene was hit hard and betrayed by his defense over 5.0 innings of work, yielding five runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks, while managing to fan three.

Sanford (4-6) had been effective in two prior starts versus the RiverDogs, and the South Florida product was brilliant in this contest.

Sanford pitched to contact effectively and made it look easy, setting down the first 16 RiverDogs to come to the batter's box until Anderson Feliz recorded a one-out single in the top of the sixth.

Utilizing his defense and pinpoint control, Sanford authored 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four.

Charleston avoided being shut out by producing an unearned run off Augusta reliever Drew Bowlin in the ninth inning. Anderson Feliz reached on an error to start the frame, and eventually made the trek to the plate on a wild pitch with Gary Sanchez batting.

Sanchez's walk loaded the bases and forced Bowlin from the hill, but Jacob Dunnington came on to put out the fire and record his first save of the year. Dunnington induced pop ups from Kevin Mahoney and Kyle Higashioka, as the RiverDogs were unable to capitalize with the tying run at the dish.

The RiverDogs begin a three-game weekend set at the Rome Braves on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Scottie Allen (1-0, 1.29 ERA) looks to build off a brilliant first outing for Charleston, while fellow righty Caleb Brewer (4-5, 4.16 ERA) is expected to pitch for Rome.
