Sanford Shines in 5-1 GreenJackets Win

Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Shawn Sanford got early run support and delivered perhaps the finest start of the season by any Augusta GreenJackets starter as the GreenJackets salvaged a series split with the Charleston RiverDogs in a 5-1 win on Thursday night.
Sanford (4-6) retired the first 16 hitters he faced, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning before allowing a one-out single to Anderson Feliz. The right-hander allowed another single an inning later, but thanks to a double play to end the sixth, Sanford faced just one over the minimum in his seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four.
The GreenJackets produced nine hits - their best offensive output of the second half. Ryan Lollis put the GreenJackets out to a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out RBI single on a 3-2 offering from Charleston starter Shane Greene. Augusta added another in the third when Lollis beat out a double play ball that allowed Raynor Campbell to score the evening's second run.
Augusta pulled away with a three-run fourth as Rafael Rodriguez and Joel Weeks stretched the GreenJackets' lead to three with back-to-back doubles to open the frame. With two outs, Carlos Willoughby reached on an error by Greene that allowed Weeks to score. Campbell followed with an RBI single to push Augusta's advantage to 5-0.
Greene (2-9) was charged with five runs - but just one earned because of four RiverDogs errors - on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out three.
The RiverDogs got their lone run in the ninth, breaking up the shutout bid when a bases-loaded wild pitch allowed Anderson Feliz to score from third. After a walk reloaded the bases, Jacob Dunnington came out of the Augusta bullpen to get the last two outs of the game and earn his first save of the year.
The GreenJackets, now 8-3 this season against Charleston, open a three-game series with Savannah on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium in a pitching matchup that features a pair of All-Star hurlers. Taylor Rogers (6-7, 2.68) takes the ball for the GreenJackets and will face Taylor Whitenton (4-1, 3.02) of the Sand Gnats. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive free T-Shirts, compliments of Petsch Respiratory Services. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
