Defensive Standout Griffin Dorsey Signs New Contract with Houston Dynamo FC

HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo FC reached an agreement with defender Griffin Dorsey on a new contract through the 2025 MLS Season with a club option for 2026, the club announced today. Dorsey was set to become a free agent this offseason.

Dorsey had a resurgent season of his own, securing a starting spot for the remainder of the year during Leagues Cup this summer to help Houston win the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, make a run to the Western Conference Final and earn a spot in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.

The defender contributed to six clean sheets, while recording three assists and five goals in all competitions, including the opening goal of the victorious U.S. Open Cup Final. In the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, Dorsey converted the winning penalty in a shootout versus Real Salt Lake to advance Houston to the Western Conference Semifinals. The Dynamo earned an 11-3-8 (WLD) record in matches that Dorsey started in all competitions this year.

He was not only an impact player in our U.S. Open Cup championship and run to the Western Conference Final, but his team-first mentality, competitiveness and commitment to everyday improvement are exemplars for every young player in our club," said Houston Dynamo general manager, Pat Onstad. "We could not be happier that Griffin and his wife have chosen to commit to the city of Houston, and we look forward to his continued growth in the coming seasons."

The Indiana University product was selected sixth overall by Toronto FC in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft and signed with the Dynamo in 2021, earning Houston's Young Player of the Year honor in his first season with the team. Over this first two seasons in Houston, Dorsey made 47 appearances and 36 starts, however, this season, he did not make consecutive starts until Leagues Cup in July, even picking up minutes with Dynamo 2 in MLS NEXT Pro to stay sharp and earn first team minutes.

"We're so excited to be in Houston, and it's an honor to be a part of this club. It's just an exciting time for myself and my family," Dorsey said. "I've been here for close to three years now, and I've seen exponential growth. I believe that exponential growth is just going to continue. We are super excited for what's on the horizon."

The MLS veteran just completed his fifth season and has tallied 68 appearances and 46 starts since making his debut with Toronto FC in 2019.
