Defensemen Dazzle Hawks Draft Class
May 7, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Three of the Waterloo Black Hawks' first four selections Monday during Phase I of the 2018 United States Hockey League Draft were defensemen, loading up the team's blue line for years to come.
The Hawks' first pick of the night was left handed defenseman Donovan Sebrango from eastern Ontario. At just 15-years-old, Sebrango had a taste of Junior A hockey in 2017/18 with the Ottawa Junior Senators of the Central Canada Hockey League. He spent the bulk of the winter at the Canadian International Hockey Academy near Ottawa. Waterloo made the pick during the second round.
In the fourth and fifth rounds, the trend continued with the addition of D.J. Hart and Lachlan Getz. Both bring right handed shots from the point, and both spent last season playing in New Jersey, Hart with the New Jersey Colonials Under 16s and Getz with the Mercer Chiefs 15s. The Chiefs qualified for USA Hockey's Tier I 15-Only National Tournament.
Waterloo chose forward Zachary Michaelis from Minnesota's Elk River High School in the third round. Just a sophomore last winter, the Nebraska-Omaha recruit was the Elks' third-leading scorer with 55 points in 27 games.
The Black Hawks had exchanged their first round selection for the right to sign forward Wyatt Schingoethe to a pre-draft tender agreement earlier this spring.
