Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are glad to announce their second player signing of the 2013 offseason. Wheeling has signed defenseman Barry Goers to an ECHL contract.
"Barry is an offensive defenseman, who comes with a compete level that is off the charts, which we hope will give us a lot of points from the blueline," said Nailers Head Coach Clark Donatelli. "We want him to be creative, which I believe will help him excel in our system."
Goers, 27, is entering his fourth full season of professional hockey, following a four-year collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. In the spring of 2010, at the conclusion of his senior season, Barry made the jump to the pro game, joining the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers. There, he recorded three points in the final six games of the regular season, ultimately earning himself a spot in the lineup for all five of Las Vegas' playoff contests, in which he again totaled three points.
The Ivyland, PA native's offensive numbers were a sign of things to come, as Goers finished tied for the team lead in defensive scoring with the Wranglers during the 2010-11 campaign, posting 27 points in 64 games. One year later, Barry's performance gained recognition from the American Hockey League, as he appeared in two games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and 19 games with the Lake Erie Monsters, dishing out seven assists. Despite spending a significant chunk of time in the AHL, the blueliner still managed to accumulate 26 points with Las Vegas, while helping to lead the club to the 2012 Kelly Cup Final.
This past season saw Goers take the ice in 19 more games with Lake Erie, while also sprinkling in three regular season tilts and five playoff games with the CHL's Denver Cutthroats.
"I am very excited about progressing my career with the Nailers, and am really looking forward to growing and developing with a top notch organization," said Goers. "I try to play with speed, and would consider myself an offensive, puck-moving defenseman."
The Nailers will take the ice to start the regular season on Friday, October 18th at 7:00, when they play host to the Elmira Jackals at WesBanco Arena.
