August 5, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets announced Monday that forward Mike Vaskivuo has agreed to terms for 2013-14 and will return to the Komet lineup.
Vaskivuo (VASS-kih-voo), 27, made his Fort Wayne debut skating six games at the end of the 2011-12 CHL season scoring two goals and nine points. The Helsinki, Finland native then led Fort Wayne to the 2012 Presidents' Cup Championship scoring team highs of 10 goals and 24 points and being named CHL Playoff MVP.
Vaskivuo made his pro debut appearing in 75 games with Dayton in the IHL during 2009-10. He led Dayton with career highs of 26 goals, 34 assists and 60 points the following season. Vaskivuo started 2011-12 skating 54 games with Rapid City in the CHL before being claimed off waivers by Fort Wayne.
Last year Vaskivuo appeared in 23 games in Europe with Grenoble of the French League scoring 15 goals and 28 points. "Mike was a top priority for me," Komet head coach Gary Graham said. "He had a lot of good options this summer and I'm extremely happy he chose to come back to Fort Wayne and will be in a Komet uniform again."
The Komets also announced that forward Jake Hauswirth has agreed to terms and has been added to the pre-season roster.
Hauswirth, 25, will be entering his fifth pro year after serving stints in the AHL, ECHL and CHL over the past four campaigns. After winning the 2009 USHL Clark Cup Championship as a member of the Omaha Lancers, the 6-foot, 5-inch skater made his pro debut with South Carolina in the ECHL recording career highs of 17 goals, 27 assists and 44 points in 62 games during 2009-10.
"Jake is a big, steady centerman that's reliable in all three zones," Graham said. "For a big guy he skates very well and I'm looking forward to working with him."
Last season Hauswirth split the year with Arizona in the CHL and Ontario in the ECHL. The Houghton, Wisconsin native finished the year appearing in 10 playoff games with Ontario.
The addition of Vaskivuo and Hauswirth pushes the Komets' pre-season roster to 20 players including 13 forwards and seven defensemen.
Maggio rights traded to San Francisco-- The Komets also announced Monday that the rights to defenseman Daniel Maggio have been dealt to the ECHL's San Francisco Bulls and completes the trade made July 26 for defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin. Maggio started his first season as a pro last year with the Komets appearing in 43 games (5g, 18pts).
The Komets will officially open the 2013-14 season at home against the Toledo Walleye Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30pm. The Komets' 62nd season features 36 home games while 36 road games are scheduled.
The Komets will also host one exhibition game when the Wheeling Nailers visit for a preseason tune-up Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30pm at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
