Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs dropped their series opener in St. Paul Friday, losing 13-5. Lincoln falls to 44-38 on the season, 15-19 in the second half.
The Saltdogs led 4-3 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, but shaky defense would cost Lincoln starter John James (4-1) dearly. The first two St. Paul batters reached on infield errors, and a Josh Burrus RBI single then tied the game at four. A sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, and Lincoln's third infield error of the inning brought home the go-ahead run. The Saints would tack on two more RBI singles to take a 7-4 lead, with all four runs in the inning unearned. An Argelis Nunez RBI single in the seventh inning pulled the 'Dogs within 7-5, but St. Paul scored six runs in the eighth inning on three home runs to blow the game open.
Lincoln had scored an unearned run in the second inning for the game's first run, and the teams then traded scores through the middle part of the game. St. Paul tied it in the third with a home run, but Nunez hit a solo homer in the fourth, his 19th of the season, to put the 'Dogs back in front. The Saints scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but RBIs by Rafael Alvarez and Juan Richardson in the top of the fifth gave Lincoln the 4-3 lead that their defense was unable to hold.
Nunez ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Alvarez went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Juan Camacho had the only other multi-hit night for Lincoln, going 2-for-4.
The two teams play game two of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Right-hander Angel Castro will take the mound for the Saltdogs.
