El Paso Diablos News Release

El Paso, TX - On Friday the 13th the Diablos would end a 13 game losing streak as they dropped the Pensacola Pelicans 8-5 on Friday night at Cohen Stadium. El Paso was trailing in the seventh inning but mounted a big come back to win the game in the late innings.

The Pelicans jumped up on top in the first inning when a sacrifice fly made the game 1-0. El Paso came back and took the lead in the third inning when they scored three runs on four hits. Jeff Hulett had the big hit in the inning giving the Diablos the lead with a two run two out double. Pensacola came back to tie the game scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings. In each inning they would have two outs and no one on and were able to rally for a run scoring one run on a wild pitch and the other run on a throwing error. They would take the lead in the sixth inning on a bases loaded ground out.

El Paso had one rally left in them though and they would save it for the seventh inning. Four runs came in for the Diablos on three hits. Rico Santana tied up the game with a single, and a sacrifice fly by Hector Bernal gave the Diablos the lead. That set it up for Arnoldo Ponce who capped off the inning with a two run home run to push the lead to 7-4. El Paso added one more run in the eighth inning on an Adam Deleo RBI single.

The Diablos outhit the Pelicans 11-8 with six out of the 11 hits going for extra base. They had five doubles and one home run. El Paso's offense was led by Adam Deleo. The Diablos' catcher burned his old team going 3-4 with a RBI. Bryon Smith went 2-3 with two doubles and a walk. Kyle Nichols also added two hits and also collected a double.

William Buzhardt started and struggled with control as he walked six. He also allowed six hits in his five innings of work but also didn't get much help from his defense. He allowed four runs but only two were earned. David Whigham came in and picked up the win in relief. It is his first win since June 19, 2009. He came into a bases loaded and no one out jam in the sixth inning and got out of it allowing just one run to score. He ended the night tossing three scoreless innings and allowed just two walks while striking out two.

El Paso can make it two wins in a row on Saturday night. El Paso native Jesse Estrada (0-0, 5.19) will make his first start at home for the Diablos.
