St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Apparently, Friday the 13th is a lucky day for the St. Paul Saints as they flexed their muscles and bombed five homers as they defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 13-5 on Friday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,084.
With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third Brandon Carter roped a solo homer to right, his fourth of the season tying the game at one.
In the top of the fourth Saltdogs power hitter Argelis Nunez hit a solo shot to left, his 19th of the season giving the Saltdogs a 2-1 lead.
The Saints answered back in the bottom of the fourth as Jason Cooper singled with two outs. Brent Krause walked and the two advanced on a wild pitch. Josh Burrus, grounded a single up the middle scoring both runners and giving the Saints a 3-2 lead.
The lead went back to the Saltdogs in the fifth as Jeremy Gillan led off with a single to left. Gavin Dickey followed with a single, putting runners at first and third. An RBI single by Rafael Alvarez followed by a fielding error by Brent Krause at third off the bat of Juan Richardson gave the Saltdogs a 4-3 lead.
The Saints, however, used three Saltdogs errors in the sixth to score four runs. Cooper led off by reaching on a fielding error from second baseman Brandon Jones. Krause followed by reaching on third baseman Juan Richardson's fielding error. An infield single by Burrus scored Cooper to make it 4-4. A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out. Carter then hit a ball to Juan Camacho at first who had the ball go off his glove and into right field scoring a run and giving the Saints a 5-4 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Steve Butler and Josh Alley put the Saints up 7-4.
With the score 7-5 in the eighth the Saints put it away with a three homer barrage. Butler reached on a one out single and Alley followed with an infield single. Chad Gabriel then launched one into the batter's eye in straight away center, his third of the season, giving the Saints a 10-5 lead. Ole Sheldon walked and with two outs Krause made history again for the Saints drilling a two-run homer to center, his fifth of the season and first since June 11. The two RBI give him 206 in his Saints career and he is now the all-time franchise leader in RBI surpassing David Kennedy's (1994, 97-99) 204. Burrus followed that with a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season. He finished the night 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Not to be overlooked was the start by Ryan Morse who pitched on three days rest and went 6.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. It is Larry Doby Passion for the Community Night. The Saints send RHP Jason Godin (6-5, 5.06) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Angel Castro (2-2, 3.60). The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.j
