Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Just over two months ago, Ryan DiPietro shook off a rough start to go five innings and beat the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park in his Shrevpeort-Bossier Captains debut. On Friday, DiPietro again struggled early, but this time could not get enough run support late, as the Explorers beat the Captains 7-4, mirroring the start to the Captains' first northern road trip in June.
After escaping a jam in the first inning, DiPietro (7-3) gave up a one out hit to Steve Pearson, who was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. After Derek Schermerhorn flied out, Javier Brown hit a slow grounder to third that Andres Rodriguez threw away, allowing Pearson to score and put the Explorers (41-40, 16-17 2nd half) in front 1-0.
The Captains (47-34, 18-16) tied it up an inning later, as Christopher Garcia smacked a two-out double to score Jovanny Rosario, giving Garcia 80 RBIs on the year.
In the fourth inning, Explorers starter John Leonard departed with tightness in his back after warming up, and David Trahan (3-4) filled in admirably. The righty worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, with two walks and six strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Sioux City went to work in the bottom of the fourth against DiPietro. Pearson dragged a bunt for a hit to start the frame, and scored on a double to right that deflected off the leg of the sliding Bryan Sabatella and careened back to the infield. Javier Brown then had a bloop double for another RBI, and Jacob Cruz later hit bloop double to left for two more runs, before Kent Sakamoto knocked Cruz in with a single.
Pearson homered off DiPietro leading off the fifth to cap the scoring, as the lefty worked only 4 2/3 innings, allowed 13 hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Captains had leadoff baserunners in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, but only scored three of those runs and nothing else, as Trahan, Jamie Arneson and Eddie Delacruz kept the Captains from getting any closer than the final score, and never once had the possible tying run at the plate.
Notes: Marcus Salmon and Mark Haynes, both roughed up on Tuesday against Sioux City, each were perfect in relief of DiPietro. Salmon struck out three in 2 1/3 innings, while Haynes struck out the side in the eighth...Seven of the nine Captains had at least one hit...Three Explorers had three hits...The Captains were out of an inning on what appeared to be an incorrect call when Brian Nichols hit a grounder to first with one on and one out in the fourth. First baseman Cruz stepped on the bag and threw to second, and third base umpire John Bullock called Andres Rodriguez out before any tag was applied, and it appeared that the tag was put on by shortstop Brown well after Rodriguez slid into the base.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday, August 14, at 7:05 p.m. The Captains return home to finish their regular season Fair Grounds Field schedule with a three-game series against the Pensacola Pelicans, starting on Friday, August 20, at 7:05 p.m. That night is GAP Broadcasting "Practice Safe Text" Night, as well as Willis-Knighton Mouth Cancer Awareness Night and BPCC Night at the ballpark.
