Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- It's been a solid week since the Defenders have tallied a win, but behind Travis Ishikawa's bat, Connecticut topped the first place Thunder, 5-3.

Trenton jumped ahead in the game in the first inning in a bizarre turn of events. Right-handed starter Nate Bump hit Jose Tabata with a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Colin Curtis as the Thunder took a 1-0 lead.

It wasn't until the third when the Defs got something going offensively. Kyle Haines sparked a one-out rally by drawing a walk, Ben Copeland singled up the middle and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Ishikawa dug in next and he did not disappoint. A rocket double down the line plated both runners as Connecticut swayed thing back home, 2-1.

Trenton equalized in the top of the fourth on an RBI single off the bat of Ramiro Pena to bring Reegie Corona across home.

The Defenders re-claimed the lead in the home half of the fourth as Antoan Richardson slapped a single to center to score Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Through four, it was Connecticut 3, Trenton, 2.

The Thunder tied the game back up in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrfice fly to right field by Pena to score Cody Ehlers from third.

With a fury, the Defenders took the lead back for good as Ishikawa continued his banner day as he smoked an outside fastball opposite field over the left field wall to score himself and Haines.

Connecticut would turn to the one-two punch of Steve Palazzolo and Osiris Matos in the bullpen and they were flawless. The two combined to throw three scoreless en route to the 5-3 win.

Palazzolo was credited with his fourth win of the season, Steven Jackson picked up loss number three and Matos nailed down his sixth save in seven tries.

Ishikawa had a banner day at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and 4 RBIs.

The Defs will take on the Thunder Wednesday night at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are available for the series at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
