Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Pittsburgh Pirates' catcher Ryan Doumit is expected to join the Altoona Curve this week to begin an injury rehab assignment at Blair County Ballpark. The Curve will host the New Britain Rock Cats, the Minnesota Twins' Double-A club, in a three-game set beginning Tuesday.
The switch-hitting Doumit was placed on the Bucs' 15-day Disabled List on May 14 after suffering a fractured left thumb in a game at St. Louis the previous day. Through 29 games with the Pirates, he is hitting .350 with five home runs and 15 RBI.
Doumit was the Pirates' second round selection in the 1999 June Draft out of Moses Lake High School in Washington and climbed through the Bucs' system before making his major league debut in 2005, hitting .255 with six homers and 35 RBI in 75 games during his rookie campaign. He battled injuries in 2006 to play in 61 contests for the Buccos and last season hit .274 with nine home runs and 32 RBI in a career-high 83 games. A catcher by trade, Doumit has developed into a versatile big league player, having also appeared at first base and in the outfield.
On his way through the Pirates' minor league system, Doumit wore the Curve uniform for the first time as a 20-year old during the 2001 season, appearing in a pair of games. He returned to Altoona in 2004 and suffered through an injury-plagued season, making only 25 appearances as the Curve's catcher and 33 as designated hitter. In 2006, Doumit played in four games for the Curve while on the Pirates' Disabled List with a torn hamstring.
Great seats remain for all six games on the Curve's current homestand, which opens Tuesday against New Britain and continues through the weekend against the Connecticut Defenders (AA/San Francisco Giants). Fans can reserve seats by visiting the Blair County Ballpark Box Office, by calling (877) 99-CURVE, or by clicking one of the "BUY TICKETS" links on the AltoonaCurve.com homepage.
