Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- It was the first meeting between two Northern Division rivals Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium as the Defenders fell in odd fashion 4-2 to the B-Mets after a an appeal at third base went in favor of Binghamton to end the game.
The B-Mets took advantage of a throwing error on SS-Brandon Crawford and a sacrifice fly by 2B-Ruben Tejada in the top of the ninth to surpass Connecticut for good in game one of the best of three series.
Connecticut got out to an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first with a leadoff walk by 2B-Brock Bond who scored on a 1B-Brett Pill RBI single.
Binghamton responded in the top of the third with some small ball. RF-Carl Loadenthal leadoff with a double than was sac bunted to third by SS-Jose Coronado and later scored on an RBI groundout by C-Josh Thole to tie it up at 1-1.
In the sixth inning each team traded runs and the 2-2 tie held up until the ninth inning.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Connecticut was down 4-2 but set up a golden opportunity with a leadoff walk by RF-Mike Mooney, an infield single by CF-Mike McBryde than a pinch-hit walk by Antoan Richardson to load the bases with no outs; McBryde represented the tying run on second. Tyler LaTorre struck out in a pinch hit for Williams then things got interesting. 2B-Brock Bond lifted one to left field where LF-D.J. Wabick made a sliding grab in which Mooney tagged from third but after Wabick fired the ball back into Coronado, he touched the third base bag in an appeal and won, which was the final out of the game.
Defenders starter, RHP-Daryl Maday tossed six innings allowed two earned runs off of eight hits, walked a pair and struck out three in the no decision. Reliever LHP Joe Paterson (1-1) suffered his first loss with 1.1 innings of work, giving up two earned runs off of one hit, walked four and fanned two.
Binghamton's reliever LHP Roydrick Merritt (1-3) claimed his first win of the season allowing one hit, one walk and one strike out over one inning. Julio De La Cruz capped off his fourth save in an identical inning as Merritt.
Game two tomorrow has RHP Tim Alderson (1-0) taking the bump against the B-Mets RHP Jose Sanchez (1-4). First pitch is slated for 6:35pm.
