
Trenton falls to Akron, 3-1

(Trenton, NJ)- Akron Starting Pitcher Josh Tomlin tossed six solid innings to lead Akron to a 3-1 win over Trenton on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has now dropped three straight. Down 2-0, Trenton (16-19) tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Second Baseman Justin Snyder walked. He advanced to second base on an infield single by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez. Center fielder Seth Fortenberry followed with an RBI single to plate Snyder. Fortenberry went 2 x 3 in the loss. But, the Thunder only tallied one more hit in the final four innings. Akron pitching retired final 12 Thunder batters in a row.
Akron (28-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Carlos Rivero walked off of Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa (1-1) with one out in the frame. First baseman Beau Mills singled to move Rivero to third base. Catcher Carlos Santana then drilled an RBI Single to give the Aeros the lead. Akron tacked on a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Third Baseman Jared Goedert. The home run was Goedert's second of the season. The Aeros made it a 3-1 lead in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Designated Hitter Matt McBride.
De La Rosa hurled a season-high 6 2/3 innings. He yielded only four hits and two runs. He struck out five and walked three. Thunder Reliever Kevin Whelan followed De La Rosa and tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief and allowed one run. Tomlin (5-1) yielded only one run over six innings. He scattered seven hits. Tomlin tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. Akron Reliever Vinnie Pestano pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 12th save in 14 opportunities.
Trenton and Akron play the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton's Starting Pitcher is TBD. Akron's Starting Pitcher is RHP Hector Rondon (5-1, 1.95). Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
