Kane County Cougars News Release

CLINTON, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars' season-high winning streak ended at five games Monday night in a 2-1 loss to the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Starter Scott Deal posted his third straight quality start, but two unearned first-inning runs against him held up for Clinton, and the Cougars' ninth-inning comeback fell short.

Deal (3-5), who's lasted seven frames a team-best five times, scattered five hits, walked two and struck out four in the hard-luck loss. The LumberKings got their only runs of the game in the first, as Marcus Lemon and Jose Vallejo scored on a two-out error by shortstop Mike Affronti, who left the game after a single in the ninth due to a leg injury he suffered while trying to make a play in the seventh.

Reliever Jason Fernandez pitched a scoreless eighth before the Cougars' offense, which had two hits through eight innings against Kasey Kiker (2-1), John Hollis and Tim Gudex, came alive in the ninth. Haas Pratt, Affronti and David Castillo each singled to load the bases with no outs, and Greg Dowling drove in a run with a fielder's choice, making it 2-1 with runners at first and third with one out. After a strikeout, Sammy Hernandez lined out to first to close out the game and give Jose Marte his third save.

The Cougars (20-43) and L'Kings (38-23) continue wrap up their series in Iowa at 7 CDT on Tuesday night. John Herrera (2-5) will face Omar Poveda (6-2) before the teams shift to Kane County for two more.
