Error-Prone Loons Beat Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - Great Lakes committed three errors and allowed 11 West Michigan hits in game one of a double header but still beat the Whitecaps, 5-4.

Each team scored three runs in the first inning and the Whitecaps took the lead in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Strieby.

Tommy Giles went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI in his first Midwest League game for Great Lakes. He drove an RBI single to center in the first, tied the game, 4-4 with an RBI double in third and put the Loons on top, 5-4 with a game winning RBI single in the fifth.

Deik Scram and Gorkys Hernandez each went 3-for-4 in the losing effort for West Michigan.

Josh Wall was the starting pitcher for great Lakes and earned the win even though he allowed four runs (3 ER) on 11 hits, 5 walks and a hit batsman. He also threw three wild pitches.

Miguel Ramirez retired the Whitecaps consecutively in the seventh and final inning to earn the save.

Game Two is scheduled to begin at 9:13 p.m. RHP Lauren Gagnier (2-6, 5.96) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against Loons LHP David Pfeiffer (NR), who was added to the Great Lakes roster today. The game will be broadcast live on 1340 AM WBBL, the Whitecaps Radio Network and at wbbl.com.
