West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Two loons pitchers combined to shutout the Whitecaps, 3-0 as Great Lakes completed a double header sweep of West Michigan. The âCaps dropped game one, 5-4 to help Dayton pull closer to clinching the Eastern Division First Half title outright.
The Dragons magic number is 3 after Dayton defeated Lansing, 3-0. However, because of the Lugnuts loss, the Whitecaps magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 5.
David Pfeiffer threw five shutout innings in his Midwest League debut and Michael Gardner tossed two shutout innings of relief to earn the save for Great Lakes.
Lauren Gagnier, who was removed from the Whitecaps starting rotation two weeks ago, threw a complete game. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in the sixth inning. The Loons broke a scoreless tie on a two-run looping single to left by James Peterson.
Josh Bell drove in the third run on a ground ball fielder's choice play.
West Michigan had a base runner in all seven innings and stranded nine on base.
Game One: Great Lakes committed three errors and allowed 11 West Michigan hits in game one of a double header but still beat the Whitecaps, 5-4.
Each team scored three runs in the first inning and the Whitecaps took the lead in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Strieby.
Tommy Giles went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI in his first Midwest League game for Great Lakes. He drove an RBI single to center in the first, tied the game, 4-4 with an RBI double in third and put the Loons on top, 5-4 with a game winning RBI single in the fifth.
The Loons became the third team ever to turn five double plays in a single game against the Whitecaps. Beloit has done it twice: June 28, 1996 and July 18, 1999, both at Pohlman Field.
Deik Scram and Gorkys Hernandez each went 3-for-4 in the losing effort for West Michigan.
Josh Wall was the starting pitcher for great Lakes and earned the win even though he allowed four runs (3 ER) on 11 hits, 5 walks and a hit batsman. He also threw three wild pitches.
Miguel Ramirez retired the Whitecaps consecutively in the seventh and final inning to earn the save.
One More: The final game of the first half between the Whitecaps and Loons is Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP Cody White (6-5, 2.98) is scheduled to be on the mound for Great Lakes against West Michigan RHP Angel Castro (6-3, 2.39). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Davenport University Career Startup Show begins at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
