Daytona Tortugas News Release

Jupiter, FL - While offense dominated the first two games of the four game set, the Daytona Tortugas (11-11, 48-44) and the Jupiter Hammerheads (7-16, 42-51) found some better pitching in the next two. Daytona fought their way to a 2-0 win in game one behind a solid start from RHP Jackson Stephens (W, 8-5). However, in game two, Jupiter's Jarlin Garcia went the distance and held the Tortugas to just three hits. The Hammerheads offense also came alive for a 6-0 win.

More rain in the area caused a 1:05 delay of the double header and game one began just after 5:00 P.M. The Tortugas were quick to get on the board as SS Carlton Daal doubled and reached third on a single from DH Sebastian Elizalde. Daal scored on a sacrifice fly from 3B Taylor Sparks and the Tortugas took an early 1-0 lead. They added on one more when Elizalde doubled to begin the third inning and came around to score on an RBI single from LF Phillip Ervin. On the mound, Stephens wasn't perfect but did enough to earn himself the win. He went five innings and struck out five. The Hammerheads scattered seven hits across the first five innings but stranded nine runners on base and went 1-12 with runners in scoring position. LHP Joel Bender (H, 12) earned a hold with the first two outs in the sixth and RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 13) notched another save by helping to record the final four outs of the game. Muhammad struck out two along the way.

In game two however, it was the Hammerheads who came out swinging. In the bottom of the first, Jupiter tagged LHP Seth Varner (L, 0-2) for four runs including a solo home run from Yefri Perez. Two of the four runs that scored were unearned. Jupiter added a run in the third and another in the fifth, both charged to Varner as well. Despite the run production, Varner still managed five strikeouts and no walks and retired the side in order in two of his five innings.

Meanwhile, Varner's counterpart in game two, Jarlin Garcia, kept the Tortugas at bay all night. 2B Ronald Bueno managed two singles and Ervin found a base hit to account for the only three hits of the ballgame for Daytona. Garcia struck out six and walked just one on the way to his third win of the year.

The Tortugas and Hammerheads have now split their season series, 4-4. Saturday was the final time the Tortugas will face the Hammerheads and play at Roger Dean Stadium, barring a championship playoff scenario. Daytona now heads to Dunedin for a three-game stand with the Blue Jays. Game one is scheduled for Sunday at 5:00 P.M. from Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB with the D.B. Pickles Pregame show starting at 4:50 P.M.
