Daytona Tortugas News Release

Jupiter, FL - 10 runs in the series opener and now 13 more in game two. In Thursday night's game, the Daytona Tortugas (10-10, 47-43) were on the winning end of another high scoring contest, this time a 9-4 final against the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-15, 41-50). It was the Hammerheads that plated an early run but Daytona responded with three in the second inning and two in the third inning and never trailed again after taking the lead.

Fresh off his appearance in the 2015 Futures Game, LHP Amir Garrett (W, 5-6) took the favorable decision back with his Daytona team. Despite the win, his game started a bit shaky. The first batter he faced, Yefri Perez, doubled, reached third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to give the Hammerheads a 1-0 lead. However, Garrett settled in and went on to retire the next nine batters he faced.

The Tortugas were quick to respond to the early deficit as they plated five runs between the second and third innings. In the second, 3B Taylor Sparks began another impressive offensive showing with a one out double. 1B Chad Wallach quickly drove him in with an RBI single to tie the game. DH Brian O'Grady then walked to put two men on. With two outs, 2B Ronald Bueno lined a double into left field to score both Wallach and O'Grady and give the Tortugas a 3-1 lead. In the third inning, CF Junior Arias led off with a single and two batters later LF Phillip Ervin walked. With Sparks at the plate, the two executed a double steal. Jupiter catcher Chris Hoo threw to second but the ball deflected into center field and Arias scored while Ervin advanced to third. Sparks then drove in Ervin with an RBI groundout to put Daytona on top, 5-1.

The Hammerheads got a run back in the fourth when Harold Riggins knocked in Justin Bohn but the Tortugas responded with two more runs in the fifth. With a new pitcher, Luis Castillo, into the game for Jupiter, Junior Arias kept the offense rolling. Arias crushed a solo home run over the left field wall to notch his eighth of the year. Next, Ervin walked and again came home thanks to Sparks. This time, Sparks drove a ball to deep center field that was nearly caught by Perez. However, the ball came loose and Sparks had himself a run scoring triple to make it 6-2.

Each team scored a run in the sixth inning as Bohn got his second run of the day for Jupiter after another RBI single from Riggins. For Daytona, C Joe Hudson led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by SS Carlton Daal. Each team would also plate a run in the ninth and once again, Sparks and Wallach combined for a Tortuga run. Sparks walked to begin the ninth and came all the way around on a Wallach double. Sparks finished 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Wallach went 3-4, also with two RBIs. Junior Arias had a 3-5 night including the solo HR.

After Garrett finished out the sixth, RHP Joe Mantoni pitched a scoreless seventh. For the eighth, LHP Nick Routt completed his first relief appearance since June 22 and also held the Hammerheads scoreless. Jupiter found one last run, unearned, with RHP Evan Mitchell in the game but the Tortugas managed a game-ending double play to seal the win, 9-4.

With a win for each team, the series is now even at one game apiece. The season series is also tied at 3-3. The four-game set continues tomorrow with game three at 6:35 P.M. from Roger Dean Stadium. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:20 P.M.
