LAKELAND, Fla. - Ricardo Pinto delivered a career-high eight innings of one-run baseball on Sunday afternoon, leading the Clearwater Threshers to a 3-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers in the series opener at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Pinto retired 17 straight at one point and faced the minimum through his final seven innings, setting down 20 of the final 22 to bat against him. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits and a walk, striking out four in his eight frames.

It was the sixth time in as many starts that Pinto (3-1) has worked at least six innings. Clearwater starting pitchers have posted a 1.60 ERA in 45 innings over the last seven games.

After Lakeland (6-17) grabbed a run in the first inning, the Threshers (16-8) knotted things up in the second.

Rhys Hoskins opened the inning by ripping a double to right-center off starter Jonathan Maciel (3-8). Two outs later, Mitch Walding drew a walk, and Chase Harris came through on a two-strike pitch with a single up the middle, scoring Hoskins to tie the game.

An inning later, the Threshers brought home another two-out tally to take the lead for good.

Malquin Canelo lined a single over the second baseman Javier Betancourt to start the inning. Carlos Tocci was then hit by a pitch, and Andrew Pullin worked a walk to load the bases.

Maciel bared down to strike out the next two batters, before Willians Astudillo put Clearwater ahead. He pushed an opposite-field single to right to score Canelo, giving the Threshers a 2-1 edge.

Astudillo would give the Threshers an insurance run in the eighth, pulling a double down the thirdbase line to plate Pullin with the third and final run.

Jesen Therrien entered in relief of Pinto to start the ninth, and worked a perfect frame to lock down his second save at the high-A level.

The Threshers will battle Lakeland for game two of the series on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Matt Imhof (4-3) will take the hill against Trent Szkutnik (0-3), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
