Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - TinCaps shortstop Jackson Merrill (No. 1 Padres prospect) homered and was a triple shy of the cycle Thursday night, but the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate) mounted a comeback and stole a win, 8-6, at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne's winning streak ends at four, but the 'Caps have still won eight of their last 10.
Merrill's leadoff homer in the first inning marked his second home run in as many days, and sixth of the season.
Fort Wayne homered three times in the game overall, with first baseman Nathan Martorella (No. 23 Padres prospect) and designated hitter Carlos Luis each hitting solo long balls of their own. Martorella, who went deep in the fourth, now has a team-best 10 home runs this year, which is also tied for the most in the Midwest League.
After Merrill's first inning bomb, center fielder Jakob Marsee later doubled and scored on a stolen base with an errant throw, making it 2-0.
Fort Wayne added on with Luis' homer in the second and carried a 3-0 into the third inning.
Dayton ate into the deficit with first baseman Jack Rogers' two-run triple in the third. But the 'Caps quickly responded again with Martorella's blast in the bottom of the third and earned two more runs on Merrill's two-run double in the fourth, giving Fort Wayne a 6-2 lead at the time.
The Dragons came roaring back though, scoring twice in the fifth and grabbed the lead with a four-run seventh. They racked up five hits in that inning, and their explosion in that inning proved to be the difference in the game.
Ryan Bergert (No. 24 Padres prospect) started for the TinCaps and matched a season high with eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
