Peoria Chiefs News Release

Lansing, MI- In what was yet another one-run game, the Peoria Chiefs were on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision to the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday. Each of the first three games in the series have now been decided by just a single run.

The teams quickly traded runs off of each team's starting pitcher. In the bottom of the first, the Lugnuts put runners on the corners with just one out against Peoria's Trent Baker. Lansing's Junior Perez brought home the game's first run via an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.

In the top of the second, Peoria wasted no time tying the score. Jimmy Crooks led off the inning with a line drive home run over the wall in right ro make it 1-1. The homer served as the fifth of the year for Crooks and was registered at 105 MPH off his bat.

From there, Baker settled into a groove. The 24-year-old retired 14 consecutive batters at one point and cruised through the middle innings.

Peoria grabbed the lead for the first time in the top of the fifth inning. After back-to-back singles from Francisco Hernandez and Thomas Francisco, Tyler Reichenborn worked a walk to load the bases with just one out. The free pass forced the exit of Lansing starter Jose Dicochea, who made his Midwest League debut Thursday. Victor Scott greeted Lansing reliever Kumar Nambiar with a first-pitch swing and an infield hit to give the Chiefs a 2-1 advantage. The next batter, Nathan Church, lined a ball into center field for the inning's second out. Francisco attempted to tag from third but was thrown out at the plate to keep the game close.

A lead-off walk in the Lansing sixth ended Baker's streak of consecutive batters retired. Following a second base on balls, Perez singled home Alexander Campos to tie the score, 2-2.

Baker returned to the mound to begin the seventh. With one on and one out, Lansing's CJ Rodriguez doubled home Ruby Angeles to push Lansing in front, 3-2. Baker departed the game after 6 1/3 innings pitched. Left-hander Nathanael Heredia recorded the second out in the seventh, but a Max Muncy single scored Rodriguez to stretch the lead to 4-2.

The Chiefs, in an effort to extend their winning streak to seven games, did not go quietly. In the eighth, Aaron McKeithan launched a no-doubt home run to left to make it a 4-3 contest. After Heredia twirled a scoreless bottom half of the inning, the Chiefs were at it again. Peoria put runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the ninth before a Scott pop out ended the rally and the ballgame.

With the loss, the Chiefs are back to .500 at 30-30 on the year. Tink Hence will take the ball Friday as the series continues in Lansing.
