Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - Fort Wayne TinCaps RHP Erik Davis fired five strong innings as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps, 7-1, Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Davis picked up his 16th win of the season to set a new franchise record, passing RHP LaTroy Hawkins. Vince Belnome drove in four runs to lead a 12-hit offensive attack.
Davis passed Hawkins for the single-season wins mark; Hawkins, now with the Houston Astros, won 15 games in Fort Wayne's inaugural season of 1993.
TinCaps pitchers did not allow a hit after the 1st inning.
In the 1st, Gustavo Nunez doubled to right field, went to second on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Ben Guez stroked a single to left and when Billy Nowlin tried to score from second, Daniel Robertson fired to the plate to nail Nowlin and end the inning. It was the last hit of the night for the Whitecaps.
Meanwhile, West Michigan RHP Brayan Villareal kept the TinCaps at bay early, retiring the first seven he faced. In the 5th, Fort Wayne finally scored when Cody Decker ripped a leadoff double, went to third on a single by Yefri Carvajal and scored on a double-play ball.
Fort Wayne erupted for three runs in each of the 6th and 7th innings. Belnome pounded an opposite-field, two-run double to left in the 6th to put the TinCaps ahead, 3-1. Then in the 7th, Belnome smoked a two-run single up the middle against a drawn-in infield to make it 7-1.
Davis (16-6) went five innings, allowing a run on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out five. He has won his last five consecutive starts. Whitecaps RHP Victor Larez (5-10) took the loss.
The bullpen combination of RHP Nick Schumacher and LHPs Nick Greenwood and Zach Herr combined on four no-hit innings.
The TinCaps improved their record to 92-46 for the season, 47-21 in the second half. West Michigan dropped to 81-57 overall, 38-30 for the half.
Fort Wayne and the Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) continue the three-game series Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark. TinCaps RHP Chris Fetter (1-1) is the projected starter opposite Whitecaps RHP Rob Waite (1-0) in a 2:00pm start.
