TinCaps' pitchers silence Whitecaps' bats

Comstock Park, MI -Four Ft. Wayne pitchers held the West Michigan Whitecaps to two hits and led the TinCaps to a 7-1 victory at Fifth Third Ballpark Saturday night. Ft. Wayne starter Erik Davis went five innings, gave up 1 run on 2 hits, walked one and struck out five for the win. He's now 16-6 on the year and tied for the league lead in wins with Jon Michael Redding of Great Lakes.

The crowd of 6,903 saw the Whitecaps jump out in front 1-0 in the first when Gustavo Nunez doubled, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Ft. Wayne tied the game in the fifth, then scored 3 in the sixth. Kevin Hansen singled to drive home Blake Tekotte who had doubled. After a double by Daniel Robertson, Vince Belnome drove in two runs with an RBI single.

Ft. Wayne added three more in the 7th on an RBI single by Hansen and a single by Belnome that drove home two more. Tekotte had 3 hits for Ft. Wayne. Belnome, Hansen, Robertson and Yefri Carvajal each had two hits. Belnome had 4 RBI's.

Ft Wayne pitchers Davis, Nick Schmuacher, Nick Greenwood and Zach Herr combined to retire 22 of the last 25 Whitecaps hitters. The Whitecaps did not get a runner past first base after the first inning.

Victor Larez (5-10, 4.33) took the loss for the Whitecaps, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits in an inning and two-thirds. Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is 2pm.
