Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - A two-run triple in the sixth inning drove in the 100th and 101st runs of the season for Great Lakes Loons outfielder Kyle Russell and broke a 2-2 tie as the Loons beat the Dayton Dragons, 9-2, in front of another sellout crowd of 5,570 at Dow Diamond on Saturday night.
Russell ripped a 2-0 fastball from Dragons' starter Ezequiel Infante into the gap in right centerfield to score Jaime Pedroza and Anthony Hatch, who had started the bottom of the sixth inning with consecutive singles. Alfredo Silverio greeted reliever Hector Santana with a double to score Russell, and Jerry Sands singled to score Silverio to further extend the lead to 6-2.
The Loons big inning made a winner of Bobby Blevins (11-10), who had surrendered the tying run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Dayton's Josh Fellhauer. Blevins allowed both Dayton runs on seven hits in six innings of work, giving him his 12th quality start of the year and his 11th win.
Hatch's single extended his hitting streak to a season-best 12 games, and Sands reached base all four times he batted on two hits and two walks. Silverio extended his hitting streak to nine games as part of a 3-for-4 night at the plate.
Infante took the loss for Dayton, allowing five runs in five-plus innings of work on eight hits. The Loons also touched up Santana for three runs in his two innings of relief, and scored their final run off the third Dayton pitcher of the game, infielder Mike Kostanty, who worked the bottom of the eighth and allowed a run on two hits and two walks.
The loss is a huge blow to Dayton's playoff chances, as the Dragons dropped a half-game in the standing and are now a full game behind South Bend for the final playoff spot with two game remaining. South Bend holds the tiebreak, so the Dragons must win the final two games of this series and have South Bend lose both of its final two games against Lansing to sneak into the postseason.
The penultimate game of the regular season takes place on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond, with the contest scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. start on another Family Fun in the SUNday. Right-hander Ethan Martin (6-8, 3.90) will start for the Loons, with Nathan Eovaldi (2-5, 3.38) also scheduled to pitch in relief, as the Dragons counter with lefty Shea Snowden (1-0, 4.18). The first 5,000 fans through the gate will receive a Dee Gordon âMan of Steal' poster, courtesy of F.P. Horak, and kids 12 and under can run the bases following the game, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
