Dragons Lose to Loons on Saturday

September 5, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Midland, Mich.-The Great Lakes Loons broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on the way to a 9-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Saturday night.

The Dragons loss put them on the verge of elimination in the playoff wildcard race. Dayton must win their two remaining games in Great Lakes and hope the South Bend Silver Hawks lose their two remaining games against Lansing for the Dragons to reach the playoffs.

The Dragons trailed 2-1 when Dayton's Josh Fellhauer belted a game-tying solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. It was Fellhauer's seventh homer of the year.

But the first three Great Lakes batters collected hits against Dragons starting pitcher Ezequiel Infante in the bottom of the sixth, keyed by a two-run triple by Midwest League co-Most Valuable Player Kyle Russell, as Great Lakes took a 4-2 lead. Infante was replaced by reliever Hector Santana, and the first three batters that faced Santana also delivered hits as Great Lakes tacked on three more runs and took a 7-2 lead. The Loons added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the scoring.

Dayton finished with 10 hits. Fellhauer and Byron Wiley each had two hits and a walk.

Infante (2-2) suffered the loss. He worked five-plus innings, allowing eight hits and five runs with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Dragons play at Great Lakes on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series. Shea Snowden (1-0, 4.18) will start for Dayton.
