Davis Drops 43 to Lead Short-Handed Red Claws

White Plains, NY - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, were playing without 5 key players, but got a franchise season high performance from Trey Davis en route to a 116-111 win over Westchester Sunday on the road.

Maine (26-10) was without Tremont Waters, Bryce Brown, Justin Bibbs and Kaiser Gates, and then Tacko Fall left after just 2 minutes with an injury. The Claws were led by Davis, who finished with 43 points, the most by a Red Claw this season. Yante Maten added 25 points, while Wayne Blackshear added 18 points off the bench.

Westchester (16-22) was led by Lamar Peters with 24 points, and J.J. Moore with 21 in the loss.

The Knicks started the game by scoring three quick baskets. J.J. Moore's lay-in made it a quick 8-0 lead and forced an early Red Claws timeout. Tacko got into early foul trouble, and John Bohannon came into the game and immediately made an impact. Former Red Claw Andrew White was red hot in the 1st, putting Westchester up double-digits. The Red Claws came back, with Sheldon Jeter cutting it to 25-23. Wayne Blackshear hit a three to give Maine a lead, but Westchester led 30-28 after 1.

In the 2nd, Blackshear opened the Maine scoring with a bucket underneath. Maten's lay-up tied the game at 32. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth. Davis' three-point play followed by a Maten fast break dunk gave Maine a 42-38 lead. Maine went on a 7-0 run to take a 9 point lead. Westchester went on a run late in the quarter, and the Red Claws led 53-47 at halftime. Davis led Maine with 17 points at the break. The Red Claws shot an impressive 62% (21-34) from the field in the first half.

Davis opened up the second half where he left off, draining a straight-on three. Maten hit a tough hook shot to put Maine up 59-49. The Red Claws' lead swelled to 11, but J.J. Moore's three-point play cut Westchester's deficit to 7. Jeter's three put Maine up 10 again, and the two teams traded buckets the rest of the period. Davis' three at the buzzer gave Maine an 89-70 lead after 3.

In the 4th, Davis scored two more quick baskets. The Knicks went on a run, with Moore's three-point play cutting the game to 95-88. The Knicks got it to a 4 point game, but Maten hit a big hoop plus the foul, putting Maine up 104-97 with 4:18 left. Lamar Peters buried a corner three to answer. Davis buried a huge jumper to put the Claws up 108-102. Davis hit another huge three to put Maine up 9. Davis and Maten would hit crucial free throws to put the game away.

The Red Claws wound up shooting 58% (39-67) from the floor, 42% (10-24) from three-point range, and 18-23 from the free throw line. Westchester shot 51% (46-90) from the field, 34% (11-32) from downtown, and 6-7 from the charity stripe.

The Red Claws return to action Tuesday at Capital City. Maine returns home Thursday when it faces Lakeland.
