Reno Aces News Release

RENO, Nev. - For the second straight night, the Reno Aces bats exploded late to cap an already strong night, and put an exclamation point at the end of a strong performance from the starting pitcher. Daulton Varsho homered twice in the eighth inning to lead the Aces to a 15-2 win, with Humberto Mejia going six innings to start and earn the win.

Reno scored first for the seventh-straight game, after back-to-back doubles from Andrew Young and Varsho made it 1-0. Varsho's double kept alive a streak of 14-straight games reaching base, and was his fourth-straight with an RBI.

Juniel Querecuto reached on a single in the second to mark a sixteen-straight games safely reaching base.

Albuquerque came around to score on an error in the top of third to put the Isotopes on the board, tying the game at 1-1.

Reno took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, with back-to-back doubles from Drew Ellis and Seth Beer. Ellis drove in Young and Varsho, followed by Beer bringing Ellis around to score on his double to deep left.

Beer's double tied him for the league lead in doubles, but was passed for second on the team in RBIs by Ellis. The two infielders entered the game tied for second with 20 RBIs, before Ellis drove in two to reach 22 and Beer drove in one to fall to third at 21. Bryan Holaday leads the team with 23 on the season.

Mejia ended his night after six innings of work, allowing just one unearned run on three hits. In his first quality start of the season, Mejia struck out six and walked none.

Mejia ended his night with a perfect shutdown inning in the top of the sixth, striking out two to slam the door after Reno scored three in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh inning, Albuquerque scored on a solo shot to make it 4-2 heading into the home half of the inning.

Reno tacked on three more runs in the seventh to stretch their lead to 7-2. Ellis led off the inning with a hit by pitch, then was brought around to score on Beer's second double of the game. Beer's hit marked his 17th double this season, moving him into the lead in the Triple-A West. Jamie Ritchie and Juniel Querecuto both reached base on walks and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Henry Ramos and Young's line drive single, respectively.

In the eighth inning the Aces' offense erupted with eight runs, tying the season-high for most runs in an inning. Varsho led off the inning with a solo shot, followed by a single from Beer and a walk from Ritchie. Ritchie's walk marked a career-high four walks in a single game. Matt Lipka smoked a triple to center field to score both Beer and Ritchie, then Lipka reached home on a throwing error.

In Varsho's second at-bat of the inning, he came to the plate with bases loaded and two outs, then laced the first pitch over the left-center field wall for his first grand slam of the season. The grand slam marked Varsho's first-ever two-home-run inning, and brought Camden Duzenack, VanMeter, and Young around to score. The offensive explosion secured the 15-2 victory for the Aces, and Varsho's six runs were a career high.

The Aces will be back tomorrow for game three of the six-game series against the Isotopes. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT from Greater Nevada Field.
