Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
(EL PASO, Texas) - Jake Meyers hit a pair of home runs to help lead the Sugar Land Skeeters to a 10-3 win Friday night over the El Paso Chihuahuas.
Meyers, who was also celebrating his 25th birthday, hit a solo home run in the first and a two-run homer in the second, both off El Paso starter MacKenzie Gore. Meyers leads the Skeeters with eight home runs and is one away from matching his career high.
J.J. Matejevic hit a three-run home run in his first career Triple A at-bat, which came in the first inning. Matejevic was assigned to the Skeeters from Double A Corpus Christi prior to Friday's game.
Skeeters starter Brett Conine picked up his team-high fifth win of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out five without a walk, through a season-high six innings of work.
Bryan De La Cruz added a two-run single in the fourth. He's driven in four runs through the first two games of the road trip. The Skeeters also scored runs on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, scoring Miguelangel Sierra, and a passed ball in the fifth inning, scoring Matijevic.
Gore was handed the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits through 1 1/3 innings.
The Skeeters and Chihuahuas continue their six-game set at 7:05 p.m. MT on Saturday. Left-hander Ryan Hartman will face off against fellow lefty Jerry Keel for El Paso.
