South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck has been called up to the American Hockey League by the Worcester Ice Cats, due to injuries in the system. The seventh year professional out of the University of Wisconsin will leave after the Stingrays team practice on Thursday. He is expected to return to the Rays early next week.

Daubenspeck was the Sun National Bank ECHL Saver of the Month for December, when he went 7-1-0 with a 1.88 goals against average and a .945 save percentage. Selected in the seventh round (151st overall) by Philadelphia in the 1992 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Daubenspeck has a record of 22-10-2 this season with a goals against average of 2.55 and a save percentage of .921.

"Kirk has been a wall for us all season long," explained Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "He has the talent not only to play at the next level, but to excel. Hopefully he will use this opportunity to showcase his ability."

In 2002-03, Daubenspeck led the ECHL during the regular season with 36 wins, 1,802 saves and 3,454 minutes. The 36 wins were the most in the ECHL since 1999-2000. He helped the Stingrays to a Kelly Cup Championship in 2001.

The Stingrays will go on the road to take on the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday night before hosting the Roanoke Express on Sunday at 3:00. The Rays are currently in fourth place in the Southern Division with a record of 28-18-3.
