FREDERICK, MD (MAY 3, 2010) - Today Winston-Salem Dash outfielder Justin Greene was named the Carolina League's "Player of the Week" for the week of April 26 - May 2.
Over the course of the week, Greene led the Carolina League with a .579 batting average (11 for 19). He also ranked first in RBI (13) and runs scored (10), and was tied for first in both home runs (3) and triples (2). His .640 on-base percentage and 1.368 slugging percentage also led the Carolina League. Additionally, Greene stole two bases, the third most in the league last week.
This is the first such honor for Greene, who was selected by the White Sox in the 20th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Francis Marion University. He set new career highs for RBI in a game twice last week, driving in four runs on Thursday against Frederick and posting a six RBI game yesterday at Wilmington. During the week, Greene raised his season batting average 78 points and more than doubled his total RBI output.
The Goose Creek, South Carolina native is among the Carolina League leaders in several categories, including batting average (7th, .356), RBI (2nd, 22), on-base percentage (2nd, .461), slugging percentage (1st, .685), extra-base hits (2nd, 12), triples (T-1st, 4), and total bases (5th, 50).
The first-place Dash continues its road trip tonight when it opens a four-game series with the Frederick Keys. RHP Nevin Griffith (1-0, 1.44) makes his fifth start of the season against LHP Cole McCurry (1-1, 4.58). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday night when it plays a three-game series with the second-best team in the Carolina League, the Salem Red Sox.
