Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - After scoring 15 runs in a three-game weekend set with the Winston-Salem Dash, the Wilmington Blue Rocks offense ran out of bullets on Monday night, managing just three hits and failing to score a run in a 4-0 setback at the hands of the Salem Red Sox.
Truth be told, the game was decided in the top of the first inning. Salem plated a pair in that frame off of Blue Rocks starter Chris Dwyer.
Dwyer (0-2) hit Peter Hissey with the contest's very first pitch. One out later Hissey came around to score on Anthony Rizzo's double to dead-center field. Dwyer then uncorked a wild pitch which gave Rizzo third base, and allowed him to come home on Ryan Lavarnway's sacrifice fly to right.
Salem added to its advantage in the fourth. A two out walk by Alex Hassan and a bouncing single to right put two men on base for Luis Segovia. The former Blue Rock came through with a single to right which scored Hassan and gave the Sox a three-run advantage.
The game's final tally came home in the sixth inning. Three straight singles to open the frame resulted in a run. The third knock came off the bat of Hassan and it scored Will Middlebrooks.
On the other side of the ball, Wilmington was stymied by Salem starter Caleb Clay. The right-hander allowed only two baserunners and one hit in his six scoreless innings on the hill.
Wilmington went down in order five times on the night, and Salem pitching faced the minimum in an inning six times.
The Rocks' knocks came courtesy of a third-inning double by Ben Theriot, a seventh-inning double by Eric Hosmer and a ninth-inning single off the bat of Adrian Ortiz.
Wilmington got the tying run on deck in the ninth when Hosmer walked with one out to put runners at first and second. But Jamie Romak grounded into a 5-4-3 twin-killing to end the game.
The Rocks and Sox will meet again on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Alex Caldera (1-1, 3.54) will go for Wilmington, while Salem is slated to counter with fellow right-hander Alex Wilson (1-0, 4.42)
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Eddie Prasch's eight-game hitting streak came to a close with his 0-for-3 night on Monday. Prasch had hit safely in every game since coming off the disabled list on April 23.
Eric Hosmer somehow managed to raise his league-leading on-base percentage on Monday. The first baseman entered the night with an OBP of .505, and reached base three times in five plate appearances. Hosmer walked twice and doubled in the seventh, moving his on-base percentage to a league-best .515. His batting average also went up with the performance to a torrid .417.
Patrick Keating replaced Chris Dwyer in the sixth inning with two men on and no one out. After allowing a seeing-eye single to right, Keating recorded three straight outs two of which came on strikes) to leave the sacks full. As a result his two inherited runners failed to score. Keating has stranded all 10 runners he has inherited in 2010.
Wilmington was blanked for the third time in a game this season. All three shutouts have come at Frawley Stadium.
With the setback the Rocks have equaled their longest losing streak of the season at three. Wilmington also fell to a season-worst four games below .500.
