Frederick Keys News Release

Backed by great pitching from the bullpen, the Keys defeated the Winston-Salem Dash, 6-5, on Monday night. Frederick battled back from a five-run deficit to get the victory. With the win, the Keys improved to 14-10 while Winston-Salem fell to 17-7. On the night, Frederick's bullpen did not allow a run in 5 1/3 innings of work.

LHP Cole McCurry got the start on Monday night and pitched well at times but the potent Dash lineup made him pay at other times. Entering the night, Winston-Salem's lineup was batting, a Minor League best, .319 as a team. The Dash scored a run in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth off McCurry. McCurry exited the game after pitching 3 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits. McCurry also tied a season-high with seven strikeouts. RHP Raul Rivero came in relief and got SS Eduardo Escobar to fly out to LF Bobby Stevens to end the inning. The Dash led 5-0 after four innings.

Frederick needed a big inning and they delivered in the fifth. The Keys plated five in the fifth to tie the game. 3B Buck Britton, CF Xavier Avery, and 1B Joe Mahoney each drove in a run in the inning but the most important connection came off the bat of LF Bobby Stevens. With two outs and the bases loaded, Stevens hit a line drive to right field. Winston-Salem's RF Brandon Short did not make the catch and two-runs scored on the critical error by Short. 3B Buck Britton was thrown out at home but the damage was done and the Keys had tied the game at five after five.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, RF Jacob Julius led of the inning with a single. Julius stole second and then got to third on a Brian Ward fly out to right field. CF Xavier Avery drove the Hector Santiago pitch deep enough to left field to bring home Julius to give the Keys their first lead of the game at 6-5.

The one-run lead was all the Keys' bullpen needed.

RHP Raul Rivero pitched a scoreless seventh, RHP Jose Diaz threw a scoreless eighth, and then RHP Brandon Cooney closed out the game for his third save of the season.

Rivero improved to 1-1 on the season while LHP Hector Santiago fell to 0-2.

Frederick and Winston-Salem play game two of the four-game set Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. RHP Kenny Moreland (1-1, 5.30) will start for the Keys while the Dash will send RHP Stephen Sauer (1-0, 4.76) to the hill. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on "Guaranteed Win Tuesday."
