A.J. Morris shined in his first win of the season as the Potomac Nationals downed Myrtle Beach 4-1 Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

Morris struck out four while holding the Pelicans scoreless through 5 2/3 innings. He allowed just two hits, a single in the first and a double in the second.

The right-handed starter left the game with two out in the sixth and runners on first and second. Cory VanAllen took over and got out of the jam by striking out Pelicans' first baseman Gerardo Avila.

VanAllen held Myrtle Beach scoreless through the seventh before coming out in the eighth with runners on the corners and one out. Cole Kimball closed out the game and picked up his third save of the season despite allowing an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly.

Though Morris' 1-2 record doesn't reflect it, he owns the lowest ERA (1.53, 3ER, 17.2IP) among Potomac starters. He has been tagged with a team-high six unearned runs.

Potomac posted the first run of the game in the third inning as Michael Burgess drove in Steve Lombardozzi on a ground ball up the middle.

The P-Nats extended their lead in the fifth as Lombardozzi crossed the plate again on a fielders' choice by Edgardo Baez. Myrtle Beach third baseman Shayne Moody fielded the grounder and threw home to Jesus Sucre, but Lombardozzi was under the tag for the score.

The Pelicans halved the lead in the eighth when Ryan Barba led off with a double off VanAllen, took third on a single by Cole Miles and when Yoel Campisano hit a sacrifice fly off Cole Kimball.

But Potomac bought some insurance in the bottom of the same frame. Robby Jacobsen hit a leadoff double and took third on a bunt single by Dan Nelson. Brian Peacock drove in Jacobsen on a liner to left, Jose Lozada advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt, and Lombardozzi plated Nelson on a fielders' choice.

The P-Nats and Pelicans square off again Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. for game two of the four-game series. Potomac lefty Evan Bronson (1-1. 5.31) is slated to face Myrtle Beach right-hander Randall Delgado (0-2, 3.45).
