FREDERICK, MD (MAY 3, 2010) - Frederick rallied from a 5-0 deficit to stun the Dash with a 6-5 victory over Winston-Salem on Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Keys scored five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, then added one more in the sixth to win the first of the four-game series.

Like it did against Wilmington over the weekend, Winston-Salem did its damage with two outs. With two down in the second inning, Jason Bour got the Dash (17-7) on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left off Keys starter Cole McCurry.

Jon Gilmore drove in a run with two outs in the third inning via an RBI single to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.

Winston-Salem erupted for three more two-out runs in the fourth. Drew Garcia notched his league-leading tenth double of the season, scoring Bour from first base. Garcia scored when reigning Carolina League Player of the Week Justin Greene hit a ball to the shortstop that Greg Miclat booted. Greene was given credit for an infield hit, but Garcia scored as a result of Miclat's error, one of his three on the night.

Brandon Short followed with a single to center to score Greene and give the Dash a seemingly insurmountable 5-0 lead. Short extended his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest by any player in either the major or minor leagues this season.

Nevin Griffith, however, could not hold the five-run lead. Jacob Julius and Brian Ward singled to lead off the fifth, and Julius went to second on an errant snap throw to second by the catcher Bour. Xavier Avery drove in the first Frederick (14-10) run of the night with a fielder's choice to the shortstop.

Miclat singled to shallow left field and was cut down at second base when L.J. Hoes hit grounder to third. With two outs in the inning and men on the corners, Joe Mahoney singled to right-centerfield to drive in Avery and cut the Winston lead to 5-2.

After Rowell was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Griffith walked Britton to force home a run and make it 5-3 Dash. Griffith was lifted from the game at that point and Hector Santiago came on with the bases loaded and two outs.

Bobby Stevens greeted Santiago with a soft liner to right that went in and out of the mitt of Short. Two runs scored on the error, but Short was able to chase down the ball and throw out Britton at the plate to prevent Frederick from taking the lead.

It would prove to be a stay of execution for Santiago (0-2) and the Dash, as Julius led off the sixth with an infield single, stole second base, and moved to third on a fly out to right. Avery gave the Keys the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field. After leading 5-0 after four innings, Winston trailed 6-5 following the sixth.

Frederick received 3.1 outstanding innings of relief from Raul Rivero (1-1). The Venezuelan right-hander allowed only a hit and a walk while striking out four and not allowing a run.

The Dash had chances to tie the game or take the lead, but went 0 for 6 with men on base over the final four innings. Winston was also hurt by what appeared to be a blown call by the umpiring crew of Tyler Wilson and Joey Amaral.

In the eighth inning, Brandon Short was at the plate with two on and two out. He appeared to foul a ball off his foot. The ball rolled toward the mound and was fielded by the pitcher who threw to first. Short, believing it to be a dead ball, did not run and was ruled to be thrown out at first. The inning ended despite the protests of Joe McEwing, who was ejected from yesterday's game in a similar situation.

Brandon Cooney pitched a scoreless ninth to collect his third save.

Winston-Salem looks to even the series at a game apiece on Tuesday night. RHP Stephen Sauer (1-0, 4.76) opposes RHP Kenny Moreland (1-1, 5.30) in a 7 p.m. start. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, May 7 for a three-game series against the Salem Red Sox. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
