Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (AUGUST 25, 2011) - Andy Wilkins and Nick Ciolli both had two home runs and the powerful Dash offense blew away the Red Sox 14-0 on Thursday night at LewisGale Field. The win, along with Kinston's 7-2 loss at Frederick, vaulted Winston-Salem into first place in the Southern Division by one-half game with ten regular season contests remaining.
The Dash (32-28, 64-66) got off to a fast start, with Wilkins and Ciolli taking Chris Hernandez deep for solo home runs in the first and second innings, respectively. Hernandez (10-7), Salem's best starter and a Carolina League All-Star, ran into major trouble in the third. After retiring the leadoff batter, the next four Winston hitters singled off the lefty to bring in a run and force manager Bruce Crabbe to summon the bullpen.
Pete Ruiz was greeted by Luis Sierra's two-run single down the right field line that extended the Dash's lead to five runs. Daniel Wagner drove in another run on a dribbler up the first base line that was mishandled by Ruiz and Winston scored twice more on a Juan Silverio sacrifice fly and a Wilkins RBI single. When the dust settled, the Dash scored six times in the inning to run their lead to 8-0.
Winston-Salem added two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings against Ruiz. Mike Blanke and Sierra both had RBI doubles in the fourth while Ciolli hit a two-run homer, his second of the night, in the fifth to make it 12-0 Dash.
Wilkins homered for the second time in the ninth, a two-run shot off position player Zach Gentile.
While the Dash offense dominated, Jake Petricka was stingy on the mound. He gave up one hit over his first five innings and left after six-plus frames. Petricka (4-7) did not allow a run and struck out four batters on the night to earn the victory. Leroy Hunt pitched the final three innings to earn his third save in as many chances.
Hernandez was dealt the loss after giving up six earned runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings.
Five Dash starters had multiple hits with Ciolli (4 for 5 with two home runs, three RBI, and a double) leading the way. Wilkins (3 for 6, two homer runs, four RBI), Blanke (3- for 5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored), and Sierra (3 for 5 with a double, three RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored) were the other multi-hit stars for Winston-Salem.
Winston scored 14 runs on Thursday after scoring eight total runs in the first three games of the series combined. The Dash's four home runs tied a season-high for homers in one game, marking the third time the team accomplished the feat. The team hit seven home runs while Salem did not go deep at all in its own ballpark during the four game series.
On Friday, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for their final home stand of the 2011 regular season. Winston-Salem will host Myrtle Beach in a doubleheader beginning at 6:05 p.m. Righties Ryan Buch (3-4, 5.21) and Andre Rienzo (5-5, 3.33) will pitch for the Dash against Pelicans lefties Chad Bell (3-1, 3.01) and Kasey Kiker (3-2, 5.79). Game one will be televised on WXII's THIS Carolina beginning at 6 p.m. while the online broadcast of both games will start at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com .
