Pelicans Game Notes

August 25, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP David Hale (3-6, 4.50) at RHP Justin Grimm (4-2, 3.84)

UNLUCKY 14: Travis Adair had two flyouts and two walks in last night's loss, snapping his 13-game hitting streak. The Woodruff, SC native is batted .309 (17-55) with 13 runs scored during the streak, the third-longest by a Pelican this season and it's tied for the seventh-longest in the league. Zach Zaneski had the longest streak in the league, an 18-gamer from June 12-July 22 and Ryan Strausborger's 16-gamer from June 1-16 is tied for the second-longest. Travis kept up his torrid hitting against the Atlanta Braves-affiliated Lynchburg Hillcats. The former Braves prospect was released by Atlanta after the 2009 season and after signing with the Rangers last year, he's gotten some revenge in going 17-for-34 (.500) in 10 games. Over the course of two stints with Myrtle Beach this year, Adair has hit .312 while batting in every spot in the lineup except leadoff.

OTHER STREAKS: Mike Olt's 0-fer last night cut down his eight-game hitting streak. That started with five games in June and was put on hold when Mike broke his collarbone in a collision at home plate on June 6. After missing two and a half months, Olt returned and picked up right where he left off, going 4-for-10 in three games with a homer, four RBIs, two runs scored and four walks before going hitless last night. Two Pelicans were able to extend their hitting streaks last night, though. Ryan Strausborger's RBI double in the fifth inning ran his streak to nine games, during which he's hit .378 (14-37) and scored seven runs. Andrew Clark reached on a pair of infield singles as he has now hit safely in six straight games.

HILL OF A TOUGH TIME: The Pelicans hold the third-best overall record in the Carolina League, but they've struggled against the team with the worst mark, the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Birds have dropped five of their nine home games against the Hillcats, and if Lynchburg completes the sweep tonight, it ensures that the visitors will earn a split of the 20-game season series and a winning mark in Myrtle Beach. The worst completed season set at home for Myrtle Beach is their 5-5 mark against Potomac.

DOES ANYONE WANNA WIN THIS THING': The Carolina League Southern Division second-half title has been up for grabs, but all three contenders have struggled recently. Winston-Salem has dropped seven out of their last nine, but they're only a half-game back of first-place Kinston as the K-Tribe has lost four of six. The Pelicans have had a chance to earn a double-half title, but they've lost five of seven and eight of 12 and sit four games back with 12 to play. The Carolina League postseason kicks off two weeks from yesterday. The Pelicans will host the first game of the Southern Division Championship Series on Wednesday, September 7 by virtue of their first-half division title. Their opponent is yet to be determined and will be whoever wins the second-half crown or, if the Pelicans come back to win the division again, the club that finishes second to Myrtle Beach.
