Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem split a Friday night doubleheader with Frederick at BB&T Ballpark. The Keys took game one by a 6-2 margin while the Dash won the nightcap 10-1.
Frederick (20-20, 61-49) got off to a quick start in game one, taking a 6-0 lead by the third inning. L.J. Hoes hit a sacrifice fly to score Xavier Avery, who led off the game with a double. In the second inning, Buck Britton, Bobby Stevens, and Kyle Hudson drove in runs to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Frederick added two more off starter Stephen Sauer (6-9) when Stevens hit hard shot off third baseman Luis Sierra's glove to score a pair and put the Keys up half-a dozen.
Drew Garcia hit an RBI double off Luis Noel (3-1) in the bottom of the third inning to score the Dash's first run. Winston-Salem (20-20, 61-49) scored again the fourth on Kenny Williams, Jr.'s base hit to get the Dash to within four runs.
The combination of Noel and Ryan Berry held Winston scoreless over the final three innings to preserve the Keys' game one victory. Noel earned the win with five solid innings of work while Sauer gave up six runs (five earned) in five innings for his third consecutive loss.
After being held to just four hits in the first game, the Dash busted out the bats in game two. Garcia again got the scoring started for Winston with an RBI double in the third off Cole McCurry. The Californian came homeward on a base hit by Jon Gilmore to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
The fourth inning became McCurry's personal horror show, as Winston-Salem scored eight times off the Asheville native. Ozzie Lewis led off the frame with a solo home run to put the Dash ahead by three. Winston then loaded the bases on an error, a walk, and a single. Brandon Short brought home the team's fourth run of the night with a sacrifice fly. Garcia was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases for Gilmore. The Carolina League's hit leader slapped a two-run single to center, making it 6-0 Dash.
After Seth Loman singled, Lewis victimized McCurry for the second time in the inning. His base hit scored Gilmore and spelled the end of the night for the southpaw. Former Appalachian State Mountaineer Josh Dowdy entered the game and was immediately greeted by a Jose Martinez two-run single. That capped the eight-run inning, a frame that put Winston-Salem on top 10-0. It was the highest-scoring inning for the Dash all season; the previous high was six runs, which the team had done six times in 2010. Only one of those runs was earned because of the early error.
Frederick scored an unearned run in the sixth to avoid the shutout.
Jake Rasner (1-0) picked up the win in a spot start. He was tremendous, throwing five shutout innings and limiting the Keys to just three hits. McCurry (5-4) suffered the defeat, surrendering ten runs (three earned) on nine hits in 1.2 innings.
Gilmore and Martinez each went 3 for 4 in game two to lead the offense. The duo drove in half of the team's ten runs.
The four-game series continues on Saturday night when RHP Dylan Axelrod (5-2, 2.43) opposes LHP Nathan Moreau (3-1, 4.44). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
