Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- The game of baseball can be a funny thing. Though the Potomac Nationals were shut out for the first five frames, and managed to score in just two innings against the Pelicans on Thursday evening, the visiting P-Nats rolled to an easy victory in the opener of their four-game set by the score of 7-1.
J.J. Hoover and Adrian Alaniz were tabbed as the starting pitchers of this contest and both hurlers delivered for the first five frames. Matching each other pitch for pitch, each pitcher tossed five scoreless frames to begin their outings with Hoover whiffing five P-Nat batters while Alaniz struck out three. In the sixth, however, was when the game turned sour for the Pelicans. With Hoover still on the hill working on a shutout, the P-Nats broke out their bats in a big way against the Pelicans ace. The first six Nationals batters to come to the plate in the sixth inning reached base, plating four runs in the process. The big blow for the P-Nats came off the bat of super slugger Tyler Moore, who blasted a three-run home run into the left field bleachers to put the P-Nats on the board at 3-0. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Hoover relinquished the game to the bullpen as Luis Avilan worked his way out of the jam while allowing just a single run on a sacrifice fly. It could have been worse, but left fielder L.V. Ware made a full-extension diving catch on a Jose Lozada sinking line drive.
The following inning, the P-Nats struck again, and it was Moore at the center of the offensive barrage once again. After Dan Lyons and Michael Burgess reached base, Moore once again destroyed a pitch to left, this time landing in the field beyond the bleachers for another three-run blast to make it 7-0. For Moore, it was his third multi-homer game of the season and a season-high for the slugger in runs batted in with six.
Moore now leads the league in home runs, RBI, and extra base hits, and has especially taken it to Pelican pitching, crushing six homers with 15 RBI in just 14 games against the Birds.
The Pelicans lone bright spot on offense came in the bottom of the eighth when L.V. Ware jumped all over the first pitch offering from Alaniz, depositing the pitch into the left field bleachers to give the Birds their only run of the night.
Alaniz basically duplicated his previous start here on the Grand Strand where the righty allowed just one run in eight innings of work on June 17. On Thursday night, Alaniz surrendered just the Ware home run in eight innings of work, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
The Pelicans and P-Nats return for game two on Friday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
